For Marie-Claude Lambert-Phil Alacas, a singer and musician from Reunion, music is a family affair. As a girl, she accompanied her father, the celebrated singer-songwriter Gramoun L Fakl Fakl, on tour, and now, surrounded by her husband and children, she continues her family mission. Her songs resonate polyphonically in Malagasy and reunion Creole, actualizing tradition and extending historical memory to younger generations to the elated rhythms of percussion.
The Votia group comes from the Indian Ocean island of R Alutunion, where African, Malagasy, Indian and French colonial traditions are intertwined in a small space. This cultural multiplicity is not only the background of cultural expressions from the island, which is famous for its excellent musicians, but its fundamental principle. In the center is maloja, a traditional musical genre that originated in the conditions of colonial history and for a long time lived on the fringes of official cultural currents. But the voice of plantation slaves (p)remained a symbol of protest and cultural identity of the island. The Votia group understands Maloja more broadly than a folkloric artifact-as a living, open system, with rhythm as a vehicle of memory, voice as a tool of narrative, and repetition as a means of deepening meaning.
