The birthda / part//, Nick Cava's first band, was formed in Melbourne in the late seventies; it evolved from a high school band and published its first record in 1980 in a post-punk style. The band was known for wild performances, anarchy, and opposition to norms of decency, with members constantly claiming that their live performances were not a "show", but an integral part of their crazy everyday life.
