Algiers in 1938. Meursault is a quiet and modest employee in his early thirties who attends his mother's funeral without shedding a single tear. He spends the next day with Marie, a colleague from work, and again quickly returns to everyday chores. The routine is soon interrupted by a meeting with RA's neighbor, Animalmond Sintes, who drags Meursault into his scheming. The whole thing culminates on a hellishly hot day when something tragic happens on the beach.
I have found that delving into a stranger can be a means of reconnecting with a forgotten part of my personal history. My maternal grandfather, an investigating judge in the Algerian port of B Alkne (present-day Annaba), managed to escape the attack in 1956, which hastened the return of my family to mainland France.
