The Masters of the word cycle is a long-term photographic project by Tomaz Bercic, dedicated to Slovenian literati of the second half of the 20th century. centuries and modern times. In black-and-white portraits of writers, poets and thinkers, the author explores the relationship between the word and the image, looking for the man behind the name on the book cover. It places portrayals in informal, intimate environments – in their homes, on the streets, in cafes or on walks-where authentic and direct images are created without studio distance.
Black and white photography highlights the face, gaze, gesture and light, and allows attention to be focused on the essence of the individual. The author does not idealize his subjects, but presents them as people with life experience, vulnerability and inner strength. The cycle acts as a visual archive of memory, a tribute to literary creation and a respectful dialogue between photography and the word. The project is also accompanied by a self-published monograph with about 45 portraits and meeting records.
Tomaz Bercic (1968, Ljubljana) is a graphic designer and artistic director at the art design agency. He has been working in photography for more than four decades, the last 25 years professionally and artistically.
