Sven Anders Hedin (1865-1952) was a famous Swedish geographer, explorer, photographer and travel writer who discovered unknown parts of Central Asia. During his four expeditions, he explored Transhimalaya, discovered the springs of the Brahmaputra, Indus and Sutlej rivers, and the ruins of ancient Buddhist cities in Chinese Central Asia. He mapped Lake Lop Nur, the deserts of the Tarim Basin and Takla Makan, and the remains of the Great Wall of China. Hedin explored unknown areas of Chinese Turkestan and Tibet and became an honorary member of many scientific societies. In 1902, King Oscar II of Sweden elevated him to the nobility.
