On the occasion of the European week of mental health, Narodni dom Maribor, in cooperation with UNICEF Slovenia, is placing 90 school lockers on the main square in Maribor with anonymous stories of children and young people about mental distress.
It is a continuation of the distress from the lockers social awareness campaign launched by UNICEF Slovenia on the occasion of World Mental Health Day last October in Ljubljana. The purpose is to normalize conversations about emotions and hardships between children and young people. The needs of children and young people in Slovenia and the system of mental health treatment require the strengthening of support services and better accessibility and responsiveness of the system, so we continue our activities.
The campaign is part of a long-term project on mental health How Are you feeling? , with which UNICEF Slovenia aims to address systemic gaps, destigmatize the conversation about mental health, as well as strengthen the competence of teaching staff for targeted work with children to strengthen psychosocial flexibility. The campaign was also supported by the world – renowned Slovenian artist Evgen Kopi Gorisek with the painting of lockers – his artistic interpretation of the mental distress of children and young people.
Mental health of children and young people is an important predictor of adult health, with half of all mental health problems starting before 15. by the age of 75% of all mental disorders develop by the age of 25. years of age. Immediate treatment can be crucial for the further course of the disease. Pedagogical and youth workers are overworked and too poorly equipped to recognize adversity and regulate the emotional states of children. We also perceive an increase in cases of peer violence, poor peer relations, deterioration of group dynamics in kindergartens and schools, and an increase in antisocial behaviors, which affects the increase in problems in kindergartens and schools.
We invite you to join us 20. May at 11. hours on the main square in Maribor, when we will symbolically open the lockers. Thus, we will put the hardships of children in front of everyone's eyes, because they should not remain hidden and it is necessary to talk about them, because this is the first step to the solution.
Lockers will be on display from 20. to 24. may.

Ob evropskem tednu duševnega zdravja Narodni dom Maribor v sodelovanju z UNICEF Slovenija na Glavni trg v Mariboru postavlja 90 šolskih omaric z anonimnimi zgodbami otrok in mladih o duševnih stiskah.
