Geert is an autistic boy who grows up with his young mother Janine in a Dutch town behind a Reuse Centre, a shop selling second-hand goods. The Center is the whole world of the boy, in it the brilliance of his mind can breathe freely. Rodaan Al Galidi is an Iraqi who was granted asylum in the Netherlands, where he now creates. He won the 2011 European Union Prize for Literature for his novel The Autistic and the postal pigeon. It is quite well deserved, because the work is striking thematically and stylistically fresh, and the description of the autistic's experience of the world is authentic, witty and insightful.

Geert je avtistični deček, ki z mlado mamo Janine odrašča v nekem nizozemskem mestu za centrom ponovne uporabe, trgovino, kjer prodajajo rabljene izdelke. Center je ves fantov svet, v njem lahko briljantnost njegovega uma svobodno zadiha. Tam Geert star elektrokardiograf poveže z gramofonom: medtem ko posluša glasbo z vinilke, opazuje, kako elektrokardiograf zapisuje srčni posnetek glasbe. Geerta, obsedenega s številkami in aparati, zunanji svet niti malo ne zanima, dokler nekega dne ne naleti na polomljeno violino, v kateri je prilepljen listek Antonio Stradivarius …
Rodaan Al Galidi je Iračan, ki je dobil azil na Nizozemskem, kjer zdaj ustvarja. Za roman Avtist in poštni golob je leta 2011 prejel nagrado Evropske unije za književnost. Povsem zasluženo, saj je delo tematsko presenetljivo in slogovno sveže, opisovanje avtistovega doživljanja sveta pa avtentično, duhovito in pronicljivo.
