David, the son of an accordion player, writes a book in Basque about his childhood and growing up in the imaginary Basque village of Obaba. When he learns that his father was on the side of the Francoists during the Spanish Civil War, this completely destroys his youthful ideals, so he begins to oppose him in everything. Later, he moves to America, and until his death, he wonders how much his father's responsibility was in killing some of his fellow villagers. The confession of the deceased is told to us by Joseba, a youthful friend who translates the writings of David.
