PETER RAUCH: the persistent remnants of Europe

You are invited to visit the exhibition persistent remains of Europe by the architect and photographer Peter Rauch, which will be on display at the Raum AU gallery until18. on Sept.
The exhibition is being created within the framework of the Arte Utile project , which is being carried out by the NGO in the public interest raum AU and the Carinthian gallery of Fine Arts with the support of the Ministry of culture of the Republic of Slovenia. Through research residencies in Pino Poggi's studio, the project enables contemporary artists to have a direct dialogue with his oeuvre and the starting points of the manifesto Arte Utile, which understands art as a socially responsible practice with which the world can be changed. The research residency is dedicated to interdisciplinary research and new interpretations of Poggi's extensive and complex oeuvre.
So far, Tadej Pogacar, Tobias Putrih, Vesna Bukovec, Istvan isht Huzjan, Polonca Lovshin, Tomaz Furlan, Heinz Sch Animttz, Aphra Tesla and Dajetika Potrc have participated in the research residency, and this year Peter Rauch is joining the residency series.
The persisting remains of Europe exhibition is the result of Peter Rauch's two-month research process within the residency. By exploring the archives and artistic legacy of Pino Poggi, he raises questions of European cultural heritage, collective memory and the significance of the fragment as a vehicle of history.
"I found stacked stones on the floor of the kglu Depot. Some were roughly broken, others were smooth pebbles. Unlike architectural models, form is found, not created. Jernej says the title: important remnants of Europe. I barely transported them from Sicily by car. They are really heavy. There are faces in the stones — Pino carved them into fragments of the foundations of our culture. He allegedly collected them in Greece, Crete, Italy, Sicily. Once he sculpted tombstones, here he depicted the myth of Europe. I read about the Greek Zeus, the Roman Jupiter and his cunning. I am looking for interpretations in which someone would point out that the myth does not exalt love, but rape. In an article on Europe, Thomas Mastnak concludes that among the interpreters of the history of the European idea, he found only one who called this myth "disgusting". I'm looking at a pile of construction waste in my home garden. Among the pieces of concrete and bricks, I find bones, bullets and some glass. A neighbor, an elderly lady, watches through the fence what I am doing. He never says anything. He walks away and sits on a bench in front of the House.
What am I doing? I repeat pin's gesture: I am making a whole out of fragments, inscribing meaning into the found forms. I collect fragments of construction waste and periodically convert them into other materials, placing and insisting that they carry more than they would be willing to admit to them. What will come of it, I inform on the spot.”

PETER RAUCH is an architect, photographer and lecturer. He graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Ljubljana and received a master's degree in photography from the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. He lectures at the VIST Department of photography and at the Academy of Fine Arts and design in Ljubljana, where he currently holds the chair of photography.
In his creative practice, he dissects the matter of built objects and insists on the relationship between document and construction. In the theoretical field, he researches the emergence of thinking in the Constitution of the object and the question of the break in the fields of art, science and politics. His major works include objects (2009-2015), third place (2014), Community (2012-2013), images, stories, sequences (2011) and Traffic Kids (2009). In 2020, he founded the production space for photography and related practices Kela in Ljubljana with like-minded people.

PETER RAUCH: Vztrajni ostanki Evrope

Vabljeni k ogledu razstave Vztrajni ostanki Evrope arhitekta in fotografa Petra Raucha, ki bo v galeriji raum AU na ogled do18. septembra.
Razstava nastaja v okviru projekta Popotovanje po Arte Utile , ki ga izvajata nevladna organizacija v javnem interesu raum AU in Koroška galerija likovnih umetnosti s podporo Ministrstva za kulturo RS. Projekt skozi raziskovalne rezidence v ateljeju Pina Poggija sodobnim umetnikom omogoča neposreden dialog z njegovim opusom in izhodišči manifesta Arte Utile, ki umetnost razume kot družbeno odgovorno prakso, s katero je mogoče spreminjati svet. Raziskovalna rezidenca je namenjena interdisciplinarnemu raziskovanju ter novim interpretacijam Poggijevega obsežnega in kompleksnega opusa.
V raziskovalni rezidenci so doslej sodelovali Tadej Pogačar, Tobias Putrih, Vesna Bukovec, Ištvan Išt Huzjan, Polonca Lovšin, Tomaž Furlan, Heinz Schütz, Aphra Tesla in Marjetica Potrč, v letošnjem letu pa se rezidenčnemu nizu pridružuje tudi Peter Rauch.
Razstava Vztrajni ostanki Evrope je rezultat dvomesečnega raziskovalnega procesa Petra Raucha v okviru rezidence. Skozi raziskovanje arhiva in umetniške zapuščine Pina Poggija odpira vprašanja evropske kulturne dediščine, kolektivnega spomina in pomena fragmenta kot nosilca zgodovine.
“Na tleh depoja KGLU sem našel zložene kamne. Nekateri so bili grobo lomljeni, drugi gladki prodniki. Za razliko od arhitekturnih maket je forma najdena, ne ustvarjena. Jernej pove naslov: Pomembni ostanki Evrope. Z avtom sem jih komaj prepeljal iz Sicilije. Res so težki. V kamnih so obrazi — Pino jih je vklesal v fragmente temeljev naše kulture. Menda jih je nabral v Grčiji, na Kreti, v Italiji, na Siciliji. Nekoč je klesal nagrobnike, tu je upodobil mit o Evropi. Berem o grškem Zevsu, rimskem Jupitru in njegovi zvijači. Iščem interpretacije, v katerih bi nekdo izpostavil, da mit ne povzdiguje ljubezni, temveč posilstvo. V članku o Evropi Tomaž Mastnak sklene, da je med interpreti zgodovine evropske ideje našel le enega, ki je ta mit imenoval »odvraten«. Na domačem vrtu gledam kup gradbenega odpada. Med kosi betona in opek najdem kosti, naboje in nekaj stekla. Soseda, starejša gospa, skozi ograjo opazuje, kaj delam. Nikoli nič ne reče. Odkoraka in se usede na klop pred hišo.
Kaj delam? Ponavljam Pinovo gesto: iz fragmentov delam celoto, v najdene forme vpisujem smisel. Zbiram fragmente gradbenega odpada in jih občasno pretvarjam v druge materiale, umeščam in vztrajam, da nosijo več, kot bi jim bili pripravljeni priznati. Kaj bo nastalo, obveščam sproti.”

PETER RAUCH je arhitekt, fotograf in predavatelj. Diplomiral je na Fakulteti za arhitekturo Univerze v Ljubljani in magistriral iz fotografije na Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design v Londonu. Predava na Oddelku za fotografijo VIST ter na Akademiji za likovno umetnost in oblikovanje v Ljubljani, kjer trenutno vodi Katedro za fotografijo.
V svoji ustvarjalni praksi secira materijo grajenih objektov in vztraja v razmerju med dokumentom in konstrukcijo. Na teoretskem področju raziskuje vznik mišljenja v konstituciji objekta ter vprašanje preloma v poljih umetnosti, znanosti in politike. Med njegova pomembnejša dela sodijo Objekti (2009–2015), Tretji kraj (2014), Skupnost (2012–2013), Podobe, zgodbe, sekvence (2011) in Traffic Kids (2009). Leta 2020 je s somišljeniki ustanovil produkcijski prostor za fotografijo in sorodne prakse Kela v Ljubljani.
