Nande Vidmar (1899-1981), together with his younger brother drag, entered the Slovenian art pantheon mainly as an expressionist, traditional landscape painter, Art Nouveau portrait painter, painter of genre and partisan scenes. Very little is known, however, about his colorful and enigmatic works from the 50s. and 60. years of the last century, which in the past were only once on public display. During this period, the artist initially creates within the limits of a new realism and a series of scenes of his studio with a decorative, almost Matisse note. At some point, however, he isolates himself and radically reshapes his expression under the influence of abstract art. The most recent works are thematically about the violence of the Second World War and are indirectly the author's criticism of the then social conditions and the cultural elite.
From 2017 until the opening of the most comprehensive retrospective of Nandet Vidmar, more than 1800 of his drawings and prints were recorded in the Bozidar Jakac gallery, as well as around 200 paintings by this painter, draftsman and graphic artist. In addition to art works and documentary presentations of highlights from the artist's turbulent life, objects and souvenirs designed by him in the early period and during the Second World War, when he was in the camp, will also be exhibited. The majority of the exhibited works were loaned by the artist's son Misha Vidmar, while the rest come from the Ljubljana Moderna Galerija, the Museum of Contemporary History of Slovenia, the City Museum of Ljubljana and from private owners.
