On the Krakow embankment there is an exhibition, which with twenty selected photographs takes a quick walk through the rich museum collections of the Slovenian Ethnographic Museum (SEM).
The stories of masks and masking are brought to life in their splendor in the museum, where more than 120 original masks and picturesque works from Slovenia and abroad are on display at a large exhibition.
The desire to become" someone else " has accompanied humanity since its beginnings – masquerading is not just a carnival party, but part of our daily life and the custom of the annual and life cycle. Masks as a universal global phenomenon have been connecting humanity for thousands of years in search of contact with the supernatural, which is illustrated at the exhibition in SEM by exceptional objects from non-European and Slovenian collections .
During Shrovetide, the everyday world turns upside down. In addition to traditional carnival customs, the exhibition at SEM also reveals a hidden background – preparations, the role of the community and the satirical power of masking that sets the mirror for modern society.
The central part of the museum exhibition is dedicated to the rich Carnival heritage of Slovenia and the diversity of its characters – from the cerkno laufars and skoromats to the Lika carnivores, Ponik's catkins and famous Kurents, and reminds us of the adaptation of traditional camouflage to modern times.
You are invited to the Slovenian Ethnographic Museum to discover the picturesque world of masks!
