HOW TO PROCEED WHEN THE BRAIN IS SCARED
Dr. Lia Katarina Kompan Erzar will talk about the regulation of fear in the brain along two “rails”: fast and slow (A. Schore).
The rapid process is automatic, physical and survival: when the brain senses danger, alarm systems (e.g. amygdala, autonomic nervous system) are activated in a split second and signals of danger flood the body – so in a panic attack, the body often “goes wild” first, and only then we try to understand it; this is a common response from the nervous system, not a sign of weakness or “madness”.
The slow process is more conscious and” top – down": the prefrontal parts of the brain can evaluate and calm the alarm, but they can only do this when at least some security is established-especially if a person has been in stress, bad relationships or after traumatic experiences for a long time. We will also touch on the methods by which we can regulate this.
Dr. LIA KATARINA KOMPAN ERZAR, univ. Diplom. psych., she is a therapist of individual, marital and family therapy, a supervisor with a SZS license and also an associate lecturer at several different faculties of the University of Ljubljana.
