After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy's top aviators, Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where his place is, as a brave test pilot, testing the limits and skillfully dodging a promotion in rank that would ground him. While training Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission such as no pilot has ever seen, Maverick stumbles upon lieutenant Bradsho Smith (Miles Teller) named Rooster, the son of Maverick's late friend, and Lieutenant Nick Bradsho Smith named Goose. Faced with an uncertain future and with ghosts from the past, Maverick must face his deepest fears, culminating in a mission that requires the greatest sacrifice from the chosen persons.

Med usposabljanjem diplomantov Top Guna za specializirano misijo, kakršne ni videl še noben pilot, Maverick naleti na poročnika Bradleyja Bradshawa (Miles Teller) po imenu Rooster, sina Maverickovega pokojnega prijatelja in poročnika Nicka Bradshawa po imenu Goose. Soočen z negotovo prihodnostjo in z duhovi iz preteklosti se mora Maverick soočiti s svojimi najglobljimi strahovi, kar doseže vrhunec v misiji, ki od izbranih oseb zahteva največje žrtvovanje.
