But when doctors diagnose her with polio, a dark cloud sets in over her vibrant world. She is forced to remain confined within the four walls of her room, where, however, she gradually discovers solace in her rich imagination. When her body is finally strengthened, it is this inner world of imagination and perseverance that guides her through future life trials. Mala Frida dneve preživlja na mehiški tržnici, kjer se brezskrbno potepa med stojnicami, se spoprijatelji z uličnim psom in razveseljuje sošolce. A ko ji zdravniki diagnosticirajo otroško paralizo, se nad njen živahni svet zgrne temen oblak. Prisiljena je ostati zaprta med štirimi stenami svoje sobe, kjer pa postopoma odkrije tolažbo v svoji bogati domišljiji. Ko se njeno telo končno okrepi, jo prav ta notranji svet domišljije in vztrajnosti vodi skozi bodoče življenjske preizkušnje. Film obuja zgodnja leta slikarke Fride Kahlo in tako ustvarja barvit portret umetničinega otroštva.
