It is almost a universal proposition to say that farmer distress occurs within the context and conditions of farming cultures and the political and moral economies that occur and extend beyond place. This presentation will explore how to ethically engage with farming communities to create codesigned resources that are targeted and tailored for farmer suicide prevention. It explores the ethical parameters and limitations of codesign by drawing on three case studies where resources were codesigned with community suicide prevention groups using qualitative data obtained from farmers.
Professor Lia Bryant is a Sociologist from Adelaide University with extensive experience researching rural community wellbeing. Her research focuses on gender and rurality, political and moral economy, climate change, farmer distress and suicide prevention. She employs codesign and creative/arts-based methods in collaborative projects with rural communities. She has published widely and her latest book is The Gendering of Hope: Rural and Farming Women’s Biographies of Hope, Care and Resistance (2025), Routledge.
