DON QUIXOTE DON KIHOT, KI JE BILA SEN

Kathak Acker
DON QUIXOTE
Co-production with city of women
"With the novel "Don Quixote", which was sen (1986), Kathak Acker appropriates Cervantes ' original to shatter the world she lives in with a new text. If Cervantes ' Don Quixote is a man who goes berserk from reading chivalric novels and decides to become a knight, resurrect chivalry and serve his nation, Don Quixote at Acker is a modern woman who has an abortion because – before sending an innocent child into the world – she must first find love. Don Quixote's chivalric novels are replaced by the romance novels of the sisters Bront James and Jane Austen, from whom Acker borrows not only motives, but Whole parts of the texts, characters and principles of writing. Don Quixote is accompanied by a dog, for her the canine reincarnation of her deceased partner St. Simeon, and a hospital bed, which addresses her as rosinanto, on her adventures after Ne Animatork. All the time, however, there are the appearances of Ni Animbon, Reagan and the Virgin Mary, each marking the time of the eighties in their own way 20. century, in which the action in dramatization takes place. However, Don Quixote's madness is not just her own, it is a departure from a world that is mad, cruel and unloving, a world in which people are dogs to each other, inferior stray animals, ruled by evil sorcerers who control everything.
Staging prefabricated follows the cut-up method, which is also the Acker writing method. She thus expands the existing situations from the novel with references from the popular culture, the political scene and the literary canon, and follows the author's biographical and autofiction narrative with specific narrative logic. Don Quixote is thus constantly interwoven with Kathak Acker and her adventures with the author's biography," wrote the translator, dramatisation author and production dramaturge Nik Znidarsic.

Kathak Acker (1947-1997) was an American experimental novelist, punk poet, essayist, and performance artist known for her provocative and transgressive works. Today she is one of the leading figures in American postmodernist and feminist literature. Her writing is characterized by radical form and experimentation with narrative and language. She often used collage, appropriation, and pastiche techniques to loosen up the literary canon and interweave it with pornography, theory, and autobiographical elements. Her works question notions of authorship, identity, social conventions, and power. Don Quixote, who was sen, is the first translation and the first staging of her work in Slovenia.
