Darije Petkovi / Damnatio memoriae Darije Petković: Damnatio memoriae

culture ethnology exhibition

The exhibition in Zagreb by the living and working photographer and artist Dario Petkovi Aluca entitled Damnatio memoriae is devoted to ways of constituting memory through visual means. Through the medium of photography, it shows its own view of the cultural landscape, which has been marked by numerous historical events and is inscribed in the collective memory depending on public and media discourses. The works in this series lucidly follow and comment on the consequences of the social, ideological and economic transition in Croatia and the wider region.

Over the past fifteen years, Darije Petkovi / I have focused on the role of photography as an important cultural category in the process of showing social reality through images of the cultural landscape. Photography is often associated with the experience of time and space, which are witnesses of historical memory. After the breakup of Yugoslavia, Croatia has been a society in transition for thirty years, which, like the one after World War II, is marked by the negation of the social values of the previous period and historical revisionism. Such breaks in continuity at all levels of society also castrated many positive achievements and events of earlier times, in the place of which a huge void has remained today. Already in his previous works, such as the occupation u 26 picture (2008), Zagreb's tvornice (2010) or The Ghosts of plausibility (2008-2013), petkovi / / <url> has discovered pathologies of politically motivated historical constructs. In the cycle Damnatio memoriae (2019), he continues to explore ways of relating to the past, using photographs, objects and archival material to build a coherent story about the relativity of historical facts and their dependence on current political discourses. As the focal points of the cycle, the artist chooses six symbolic locations that marked the currents of the previous history; from the famous Cove Slana on the island of Pag to the political School in Kumrovac.

The exhibition was created in cooperation with the Vladimir Buzanchi Gallery, which operates within the Cultural Center Novi Zagreb, where the exhibition Damnatio memoriae premiered in 2019.

Razstava v Zagrebu živečega in delujočega fotografa in umetnika Darija Petkovića z naslovom Damnatio memoriae se posveča načinom konstitucije spomina z vizualnimi sredstvi.
