Led by Teno R saxophonist Christoph Irniger, the Pilgrim group has been considered one of the most interesting names in the younger European jazz scene for many years. The prestigious Jazziz magazine called them one of the most exciting European jazz ensembles, and in March 2025 they present their sixth album Human Intelligence Live at Intakt Records .
Their music combines thoughtful composition and open space for spontaneous creation. Some parts are completely improvised, others accurately written, and most of the compositions are created somewhere in between, where structure and freedom of expression are intertwined. The result is a distinctly unique sound that moves between intimate restraint and violent energy and is difficult to fit into classic genre frames.
For Pilgrim, a musical theme is never a definitive form, but a starting point for the development of new ideas. Each member of the cast develops the story in his own way, which is why the compositions take on a different image over and over again. It is this openness that creates a feeling of freshness and unpredictability, which remains one of the greatest qualities of the group.
Music critic Kevin LeGendre wrote on the release of the last album that it is a music without artificial limits, where the exceptional connection of the group combines the imagination, superior communication with each other and the expressive power of each individual. Peter Margasak also highlights their contemporary sound, combining the influences of America's most advanced jazz artists with a distinct European sensibility, in the magazine Cross 6inds.
The quintet has been active since 2010, with members coming from various parts of Switzerland. In addition to Pilgrim, they also participate in many other international projects. Over the course of their career, they have had the opportunity to collaborate and be educated by renowned jazz musicians such as Dave Douglas, Nasheet Animacaits, Dave Liebman, and Joe Animac Baron.
