Bozidar JAKAC (1899, Novo mesto – 1989, Ljubljana), a famous Slovenian painter and graphic artist, studied at the Academy in Prague and studied in Berlin and Paris. An important portraitist, he travelled widely around the world and recorded impressions of his travels in both painting and printmaking as well as photography and film. He was among the main initiators and organizers of the establishment of the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana and at the same time its rector for three terms. He was the initiator of the International Biennial of graphic arts in Ljubljana in 1955, twice president of the Association of Slovenian fine artists, from 1948 to 1950 also president of the Association of fine artists of Yugoslavia as well as a regular member of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts and Corresponding Member of other Yugoslav academies, member of the European Academy in Paris and honorary member of the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno in Florence. He has received all the Central Cultural state awards, and has held around two hundred solo exhibitions at home and abroad. He lived and worked in Ljubljana, where he died on the 20th. in November 1989.
Bozidar Jakac was closely associated with Kostanjevica na Krki, as his mother was from the nearby village of Slinovce. This also led him to donate an extensive opus of prints, pastels and oils to the newly founded gallery that bears his name in 1974. His example was followed by donations of works of art by the artist Tone Kralj and the legacy of the kostanjevica artist Joze Gorjup. The first opening of the three permanent collections of the aforementioned artists dates back to 1976. The selection of works and their placement in the exhibition center was carried out by Bozidar Jakac himself for his installation. In 1999, after the renovation of the premises, partial restoration and the acquisition of new works, the installation was prepared by the curator Barbara Rupel. The new layout is in 2009, at 110. anniversaries of the birth of the artist, signed by the authors: Andrej Smrekar, Milcek Komelj, Goran Milovanovi and Jovo Grobovsek. From 17. in June 2023, the last renovated permanent installation, prepared by the curator of the Bozidar Jakac Gallery, Kristina T. Simoncic, is on display and follows the chronology of the artist's life and work. There is a selection of 83 works of art in the collection of Bozidar Jakac, which comprises more than 2600 units. Among those presented on the new installation are 29 paintings, 48 prints and 6 drawings that cover Jakac's creation in time from his youth and Prague academic period, through mature works of landscapes and portraits of jakac's recognizable lyrical realism to his partisan prints and large prints of his last period, which date back to the 70s. years of the last century. Two Showcases are also placed in the exhibition area. In the first, it is possible to browse through a selection of sketches and drawings from the drawing diaries of Bozidar Jakac, which were created during his study period in Prague and on his travels in the first half of the 20th century. years of the last century. The second showcase has a pedagogical character, and there is a selection of graphic matrices and accessories and a painting palette, which will bring the creative process of making prints and Paintings closer to visitors and a younger audience.

BOŽIDAR JAKAC (1899, Novo mesto – 1989, Ljubljana), znani slovenski slikar in grafik, je študiral na akademiji v Pragi ter se študijsko izpopolnjeval v Berlinu in Parizu. Bil je pomemben portretist, veliko je potoval po svetu in beležil vtise s potovanj tako v slikarstvu in grafiki kot tudi v fotografiji in filmu. Bil je med glavnimi pobudniki in organizatorji ustanovitve Akademije likovnih umetnosti v Ljubljani ter hkrati tri mandate njen rektor. Bil je pobudnik Mednarodnega grafičnega bienala v Ljubljani leta 1955, dvakrat predsednik Društva slovenskih likovnih umetnikov, od 1948 do 1950 tudi predsednik Zveze likovnih umetnikov Jugoslavije kot tudi redni član Slovenske akademije znanosti in umetnosti in dopisni član drugih jugoslovanskih akademij, član Evropske akademije v Parizu in častni član Accademia delle Arti del Disegno v Firencah. Prejel je vsa osrednja kulturna državna priznanja, doma in v tujini je imel okrog dvesto samostojnih razstav. Živel in ustvarjal je v Ljubljani, kjer je tudi umrl 20. novembra 1989.
Božidar Jakac je bil tesno povezan s Kostanjevico na Krki, saj je bila iz bližnje vasi Slinovce po rodu njegova mati. Tudi to je botrovalo, da je leta 1974 novoustanovljeni galeriji, ki nosi njegovo ime, daroval obsežen opus grafik, pastelov in olj. Njegovemu zgledu so z donacijami umetniških del sledili umetnik Tone Kralj in zapuščina kostanjeviškega umetnika Jožeta Gorjupa. Prvo odprtje treh stalnih zbirk omenjenih umetnikov sega v leto 1976. Izbor del in njihovo umestitev v razstavišče je, za svojo postavitev, opravil Božidar Jakac sam. Leta 1999 je, po prenovi prostorov, delnem restavriranju in pridobitvi novih del, postavitev pripravila kustodinja Barbara Rupel. Novo postavitev so leta 2009, ob 110. obletnice rojstva umetnika, podpisali avtorji: Andrej Smrekar, Milček Komelj, Goran Milovanović in Jovo Grobovšek. Od 17. junija 2023 pa je na ogled zadnja prenovljena stalna postavitev, ki jo je pripravila kustodinja Galerije Božidar Jakac, Kristina T. Simončič in vsebinsko sledi kronologiji umetnikovega življenja in dela. Na ogled je izbor 83 umetniških del zbirke Božidarja Jakca, ki sicer obsega več kot 2600 enot. Izmed predstavljenih na novi postavitvi je 29 slik, 48 grafik ter 6 risb, ki časovno pokrivajo Jakčevo ustvarjanje vse od mladostnega in praškega akademskega obdobja, preko zrelih del krajin in portretov prepoznavnega Jakčevega liričnega realizma do njegovih partizanskih grafik in velikih grafik njegovega zadnjega obdobja, ki segajo v 70. leta prejšnjega stoletja. V razstavišče sta umeščeni tudi dve vitrini. V prvi je v elektronski obliki mogoče prelistati izbor skic in risb iz risarskih dnevnikov Božidarja Jakca, ki so nastajali med njegovim študijskim obdobjem v Pragi ter na potovanjih v prvi polovici 20. let prejšnjega stoletja. Druga vitrina ima pedagoški značaj, v njej pa je na ogled izbor grafičnih matric in pripomočkov in slikarska paleta, ki bodo ustvarjalni proces izdelave grafik in slik približali obiskovalcem ter mlajšemu občinstvu.
