Curator: Jane Animatithers; assistant: Ria Ha Animatthorn; head of BIO27: Anja Radovic
27. Biennale BIO Ljubljana (BIO27) , the oldest and one of the world's leading biennales of design, will be held this year under the tutelage of British curator Jane Moditithers. It will bring together advanced and environmentally conscious designers, architects, thinkers and researchers from all over the world and present technologies that emulate the old knowledge and skills of our ancestors, are environmentally friendly, and in harmony with the Earth.
Opening: 26. May 2022
The Biennale at the Museum of architecture and design (MAO), which is being prepared in cooperation with the Center for creativity (CzK), will include the exhibition Supervernacular, an exhibition of five commissioned projects of the production platform and a varied program of talks, workshops and other interesting events that will take place throughout the city.
Origins and old practices of vernacular
The introductory part of the bio27 exhibition is presented as an Modulunderkammer of objects and ideas, in which the fundamental beliefs of the movement are explained. Through works from the Slovenian national heritage, it will be presented how vernacular practices have inspired designers through the 20. century and today. The focus will be on the works of creators such as Dajetica Potrc (Slovenia), Adam no Animulch (Czech Republic) and Enzo Mari and Bruno Munari (Italy).
Revival of tradition and community life
Through the works of creators such as Carolien Niebling (Netherlands), Ant Studio (India), Alicja Biela Alverska + Centrala (Poland), Francesca Sarti from the arabeschi di Latte studio (Italy) and others, visitors to the Biennale will have the opportunity to see how modern designers imagine traditional ideas and old practices and adapt them to today's needs and challenges. In the third part of the supervernacular exhibition, various design procedures and systems will be presented that serve as alternative solutions to modern technologies, which in many cases in the era of climate change can no longer sustainably support the demands of an increasingly numerous population. Projects such as solar panels by designer Marjan van Aubel (Netherlands), plant materials by atelier LUMA (France) and water systems by ooze Architects (Netherlands) reveal local processes and natural circulation. Also on display will be projects such as Isla Urbana (Mexico), which strives for more rational and environmentally sustainable water management, Kamikatsu village and waste-free center (Japan) and the project of INDUS Atelier Bio-ID Lab from the Faculty of Bartlett School of Architecture (UK). All of them represent research and projects at the center of which are the human being and the values of the community.
BIO27 in the field: production platform
Within the framework of the production platform of the BIO27 Supervernacular exhibition, experimental projects of five Slovenian interdisciplinary groups under the mentorship of internationally renowned mentors will be presented in cooperation with CzK, which will tackle pressing problems in the field of local communities.
The Krater Design Collective, in collaboration with Atelier LUMA (France) and BC Materials (Belgium), undertook research on architecture from compacted soil and created a teahouse that stands on a construction site in the center of Ljubljana. BlackBerry Group.plus, based in the remote alpine village of Topol kg, under the mentorship of food designer Caroline Niebling (Netherlands), ventured into the "world of cereals", drawing inspiration from Slovenia's rich cultural, agricultural and culinary heritage and transforming the Slovenian tradition of using buckwheat. The Pjorkkala group, under the mentorship of Shneel Malik (India), an architect, sustainable design researcher and social entrepreneur, has tackled the problems of natural water pollution in Slovenia by creating prototypes for local natural solutions. Adam no Amulch, an expert in architectural history and co-founder of the creative group OKOLO (Czech Republic), is the mentor of the group Garnitura , which presents to the new audience the legacy of the renowned Slovenian architect Joze Plecnik , drawing on the architect's human vision of the city of Ljubljana. The Futuring group, however, undertook an environmental revision of the Biennale Supervernacular with the aim of reducing its impact on the environment. Under the mentorship of designer and sustainability expert Sophie Thomas (UK), the group is developing a freely accessible toolkit to raise public awareness and reduce its impact on the environment.
From Plecnik's handwriting to the sausage of the future
The design of the BIO27 logo and the development of the font, which will be freely available to the participants of the Biennale, is the work of the Kellenberger-Animkhite studio from London. The designers found inspiration for The Shape of the capital letters in the handwriting on the sketches of the architect Joze Plecnik . With a series of photographs of modernist architecture in Croatia and Slovenia, Czech artist Adam No. Ilucch documented how vernacular has often been an unnoticed element of modernism ever since the 30s. years of the last century ahead. A very interesting project for the general public is certainly the sausage of the future. With him, Dutch food designer Caroline Niebling, in collaboration with chef Igor Jagodic from Ljubljana's Strelec restaurant and butcher Marko Butalic, designed an environmentally friendly vegetable sausage. The recipe was prepared on the inspiration of the local food culture, the main ingredients of which are buckwheat, chervil and mushrooms.

27. bienale BIO Ljubljana (BIO27) , najstarejši in eden vodilnih svetovnih bienalov oblikovanja, bo letos potekal pod taktirko britanske kustosinje Jane Withers.
Izvor in stare prakse vernakularnega
Obujanje tradicije in življenje v skupnosti
Projekti, kot so solarne plošče oblikovalke Marjan van Aubel (Nizozemska), rastlinski materiali ateljeja Atelier LUMA (Francija) in vodni sistemi ateljeja Ooze Architects (Nizozemska), razkrivajo lokalne procese in naravno kroženje. Vsi predstavljajo raziskave in projekte, v središču katerih so človek in vrednote skupnosti.
