We are pleased to announce a solo exhibition by Bart Lunenburg, a multidisciplinary artist of the younger generation from the Netherlands. The exhibition is created in collaboration with the Maribor Art Gallery and RAVNIKAR Projects (Ljubljana), which works internationally in the field of contemporary art and supports new creative voices.
With his first solo exhibition in Maribor, Lunenburg focuses on the textile heritage of the city as a key element of its architectural, social and cultural structure. The project is based on his research of the work of the architect Joze Plecnik, which the artist has been dedicated to since 2024, when he took part in the residency program in Switzerland (Mglc) and presented the exhibition to decide where the shadow falls at the Plecnik house in Ljubljana. For the exhibition in Maribor, the artist expands his research field by connecting Plecnik's repeated references to textiles, patterns and weaving with the history of the city, which in its time was one of the important centers of the textile industry. Through research work in archives and in the field, and material experiments in the studio, Lunenburg explores how the work's choreography, gender-marked production, and industrial memory are woven into the architectural fabric. It treats the city as a "garment" and reveals how the textile industry has shaped the urban image of Maribor and its collective memory.
In his multidisciplinary practice, Bart Lunenburg explores architecture as a carrier of memory, history and living experience. His research-oriented approach, based mainly on working with models, archival materials and long-term, location-specific observation, translates into sculptures, photographs, drawings, textiles and spatial layouts. With an in – depth approach, the artist "excavates" buildings and spaces, their multifaceted stories – materials, ideologies and emotional deposits-and transforms them into independent objects and narratives. Lunenburg focuses on questions of how architecture "absorbs" human desires, fears, and social contradictions, treating wagers and cities as individual entities with their own memories.
Bart Lunenburg (1995, Utrecht, NL) graduated with honors in photography from the Utrecht University of the Arts in 2017, and also studied art history at the University of Amsterdam between 2016 and 2018. His work attracted attention both in the Netherlands and internationally. In the last period, he has presented himself at various exhibition venues, including Atelier N / A (bod/no), Plecnik House (Ljubljana, SI), RAVNIKAR (Ljubljana, SI), Lust/Amkarande (Tilburg, NL), at the/Amarmoes Biennial (Amsterdam, NL), Van Gogh House (London, UK), Kunsthal KAdE (Amersfoort, NL), Catharijneconvent Museum (Utrecht, NL), buitenplaats doornburgh (Maarssen, NL), The diepenheim drawing Centre (Diepenheim, NL), The PHOTODOC/Art Institute Casco (Utrecht, NL), garage Rotterdam (Rotterdam, NL), the flehite museum (Amersfoort, NL), P/ / / / / Akt (Amsterdam, NL), at the prospects exhibition within art Rotterdam (Rotterdam, NL), and at Unseen Photo Fair in Art Brussels (be). In 2018, he was nominated for the K. F. Hein art fellowship, and in 2021 for the Paul Huf award given by the Amsterdam FOAM Museum of photography.
His works are held in numerous art collections, including the art collections of the Dutch government and the Ministry of foreign affairs, the collection of the Museum and galleries of the city of Ljubljana (SI), the art collections of AMC (Academic Medical Center Amsterdam, NL), Antoni van Leeu / AMC (NL) and BPD (Bou / Fonds Property / Development, NL) and the Ekard collection (NL).
The exhibition was created in cooperation with RAVNIKAR Projects and with the support of Mondriaan Fonds (NL). The artist residency in Maribor (July 2026) was supported by the residency program SobaZaGosteMaribor / bakeries Magdalenska network .
During the research process, the artist was given access to museum, archival and library materials: the Regional Museum Maribor, the regional archive Maribor, the University Library Maribor and The Art cabinet Primoz Premzl.

Z veseljem napovedujemo samostojno razstavo Barta Lunenburga, multidisciplinarnega umetnika mlajše generacije iz Nizozemske. Razstava nastaja v sodelovanju Umetnostne galerije Maribor in RAVNIKAR Projects (Ljubljana), ki v mednarodnem prostoru deluje na področju sodobne umetnosti in podpira nove ustvarjalne glasove.
S svojo prvo samostojno razstavo v Mariboru se Lunenburg posveča tekstilni dediščini mesta kot ključnemu elementu njegove arhitekturne, družbene in kulturne strukture. Projekt izhaja iz njegovega raziskovanja dela arhitekta Jožeta Plečnika, čemur se umetnik posveča že od leta 2024, ko se je v udeležil rezidenčnega programa v Švicariji (MGLC) in se z razstavo Odločiti se, kam pade senca predstavil v Plečnikovi hiši v Ljubljani. Za razstavo v Mariboru umetnik svoje raziskovalno polje razširi s povezovanjem Plečnikovih ponavljajočih se referenc na tekstil, vzorce in tkanje z zgodovino mesta, ki je bilo svoj čas eno pomembnejših središč tekstilne industrije. Z raziskovalnim delom v arhivih in na terenu ter z materialnimi eksperimenti v studiu, Lunenburg raziskuje, kako so koreografija dela, spolno zaznamovana produkcija in industrijski spomin vtkani v arhitekturno tkivo. Mesto obravnava kot »oblačilo« ter razkriva, kako je tekstilna industrija oblikovala urbano podobo Maribora in njegov kolektivni spomin.
Bart Lunenburg v svoji multidisciplinarni praksi raziskuje arhitekturo kot nosilko spomina, zgodovine in bivanjske izkušnje. Njegov raziskovalno usmerjen pristop, ki temelji predvsem na delu z maketami, arhivskim gradivom in dolgotrajnem, lokacijsko specifičnem opazovanju prevaja v skulpture, fotografije, risbe, tekstil in prostorske postavitve. S poglobljenim pristopom umetnik »izkopava« stavbe in prostore, njihove večplastne zgodbe – materiale, ideologije in čustvene usedline – ter jih preoblikuje v samostojne objekte in pripovedi. Lunenburg se osredotoča na vprašanja kako arhitektura »vpija« človeške želje, strahove in družbena protislovja, pri čemer obravnava stave in mesta kot individualne entitete z lastnimi spomini.
Bart Lunenburg (1995, Utrecht, NL) je leta 2017 z odliko diplomiral iz fotografije na Univerzi za umetnost v Utrechtu, med letoma 2016 in 2018 pa je študiral tudi umetnostno zgodovino na Univerzi v Amsterdamu. S svojim delom je pritegnil pozornost tako na Nizozemskem kot v mednarodnem prostoru. V zadnjem obdobju se je predstavil na različnih razstaviščih, med drugim v Atelier NŌUA (Bodø, NO), Plečnikovi hiši (Ljubljana, SI), RAVNIKAR (Ljubljana, SI), Lustwarande (Tilburg, NL), na Warmoes Biennial (Amsterdam, NL), v Van Gogh House (London, VB), Kunsthal KAdE (Amersfoort, NL), Muzeju Catharijneconvent (Utrecht, NL), Buitenplaats Doornburgh (Maarssen, NL), Centru za risbo Diepenheim (Diepenheim, NL), FOTODOK / Umetniškem inštitutu Casco (Utrecht, NL), Garage Rotterdam (Rotterdam, NL), Muzeju Flehite (Amersfoort, NL), P/////AKT (Amsterdam, NL), na razstavi Prospects v okviru Art Rotterdam (Rotterdam, NL) ter na Unseen Photo Fair in Art Brussels (BE). Leta 2018 je bil nominiran za umetniško štipendijo K.F. Hein, leta 2021 pa za nagrado Paul Huf, ki jo podeljuje amsterdamski muzej fotografije Foam.
Njegova dela hranijo v številnih umetniških zbirkah, med drugim v umetniških zbirkah nizozemske vlade ter ministrstva za zunanje zadeve, zbirki Muzeja in galerij mesta Ljubljane (SI), umetniških zbirkah AMC (Akademski medicinski center Amsterdam, NL), Antoni van Leeuwenhoek (NL) in BPD (Bouwfonds Property Development, NL) ter v zbirki Ekard (NL).
Razstava je nastala v sodelovanju z RAVNIKAR Projects ter s podporo Mondriaan Fonds (NL). Umetniško rezidenco v Mariboru (julij 2026) je podprl rezidenčni program SobaZaGosteMaribor / Pekarne Magdalenske mreže .
Umetniku so tekom raziskovalnega procesa dostop do muzejskega, arhivskega in knjižničnega gradiva omogočili: Pokrajinski muzej Maribor , Pokrajinski arhiv Maribor , Univerzitetna knjižnica Maribor in Umetniški kabinet Primož Premzl .
