Story
Amrum island in the spring of 1945. In the final days of the war, 12-year-old Nanning struggles with the treacherous sea to hunt seals, goes night fishing, and works on a nearby farm to help his mother feed her family. Despite the hardships, life on a beautiful, windy island seems almost paradise. When farmer Tessa mentions to Nanning that the war is about to end, the boy – too young to understand the political implications – is happy at the thought that his father, a Nazi officer, might return home soon. But the news of Germany's impending defeat sends his mother to ruin, and as Nanning seeks support in his community, he finds that the real enemy is much closer than he imagined.
Author's statement
"Hark Bohm wrote a screenplay full of poetry, beauty and suspense. When he realized that he would not be able to make the film himself, he turned to me. / ... / [While editing the script] the story grew to my heart. It was like adopting a child – at some point you just stop doubting and start loving him unconditionally. /…/
At first I conceived the whole thing as an experimental film: How Should I tackle Hark Bohm's film? I revisited his works, analyzed camera angles, actor guidance, editing – and especially his posture. But the closer the filming got, the more I realized that it made no sense. I have to make my own movie!
When I realized this, suddenly everything fell into place. The two films that came to mind when Hark first told me the story were the Bicycle Thieves and the shoe cleaners of Vittoria De Sica. The scenes in which Nanning searches for driftwood at night made me think of the night of the hunter Charles Laughton. Everything is supposed to be permeated by the spirit of Stay With Me By Rob Reiner. So my film education became my first personal connection with this film. Others followed.
But the most important realization came shortly before the completion of the project: friends and acquaintances, who lived in a kind of ‘Disne / disland’ version of Germany, started talking about emigrating from the country. But Goethe said, ' the place where you form is your homeland.'And I don't want to leave it to the Nazis.
Amrum speaks of expulsion from Paradise. For me it has become a journey into the depths of my ‘German soul’. Perhaps this is the last lesson I learned from Master Hark Bohm: the film remains an eternal mystery.«

Zgodba
Otok Amrum spomladi leta 1945. V zadnjih dneh vojne se 12-letni Nanning spopada z zahrbtnim morjem zato, da bi lovil tjulnje, hodi na nočni ribolov in dela na bližnji kmetiji, da bi mami pomagal nahraniti družino. Kljub stiskam se življenje na lepem, vetrovnem otoku zdi skoraj rajsko. Ko kmetica Tessa Nanningu omeni, da se bo vojna kmalu končala, je deček – premlad, da bi razumel politične posledice – vesel ob misli, da bi se njegov oče, nacistični častnik, morda kmalu vrnil domov. Toda novica o bližajočem se porazu Nemčije pošlje njegovo mater v propad, in ko Nanning išče podporo v svoji skupnosti, ugotovi, da je pravi sovražnik veliko bližje, kot si je predstavljal.
Izjava avtorja
»Hark Bohm je napisal scenarij, poln poezije, lepote in napetosti. Ko je spoznal, da filma ne bo mogel posneti sam, se je obrnil name. /…/ [Med prirejanjem scenarija] mi je zgodba prirasla k srcu. Bilo je, kot bi posvojil otroka – na neki točki preprosto nehaš dvomiti in ga začneš brezpogojno ljubiti. /…/
Sprva sem si vso stvar zamislil kot eksperimentalni film: kako naj se lotim filma Harka Bohma? Ponovno sem si ogledal njegova dela, analiziral zorne kote kamere, vodenje igralcev, montažo – in predvsem njegovo držo. A bolj ko se je snemanje bližalo, bolj sem ugotavljal, da to nima smisla. Posneti moram svoj film!
Ko sem to spoznal, je nenadoma vse padlo na svoje mesto. Filma, ki sta mi prišla na misel, ko mi je Hark prvič povedal zgodbo, sta bila Tatovi koles in Čistilci čevljev Vittoria De Sice. Ob prizorih, v katerih Nanning ponoči išče naplavljeni les, sem pomislil na Noč lovca Charlesa Laughtona. Vse naj bi prežemal duh filma Ostani z menoj Roba Reinerja. Tako je moja filmska vzgoja postala moja prva osebna povezava s tem filmom. Sledile so še druge.
A najpomembnejše spoznanje je prišlo malo pred zaključkom projekta: prijatelji in znanci, ki so živeli v nekakšni ‘disneylandski’ različici Nemčije, so začeli govoriti o izselitvi iz države. Toda Goethe je rekel: ‘Kraj, kjer se oblikuješ, je tvoja domovina.’ In jaz je ne želim prepustiti nacistom.
Amrum govori o izgonu iz raja. Zame je postal popotovanje v globine moje ‘nemške duše’. Morda je to zadnja lekcija, ki sem se je naučil od mojstra Harka Bohma: film ostaja večna skrivnost.«
